The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET) monitors
beaches along many sections of the North American coast looking for beached seabirds
in order to gain data on environmental conditions threatening marine life. SEANET
provides valuable data to scientists about ecosystem health, as well as knowledge
to help both birds and humans that live in coastal environments. SEANET has just
expanded its program to Long Island and New Jersey, and the Wetlands Institute
is the south Jersey clearinghouse for volunteers. Working with the SEANET program,
you’ll be trained on beached bird ID and data recording, and then walk a designated
segment of local beach twice a month throughout the year looking for stranded
seabirds. SEANET is sponsored by Tufts University and the Wildlife Trust. For
information on upcoming training sessions, call the Research Coordinator at (609)368-1211.
